Celebrating Two Decades of Conservation Excellence: Manyoni’s 20-Year Journey (2004-2024), A Walk Down Memory Lane

In 2024, we proudly celebrate the 20th anniversary of Manyoni Private Game Reserve, a conservation sanctuary born from a shared vision of safeguarding South Africa’s wildlife heritage. Over two decades, Manyoni has transformed into a thriving ecosystem, a beacon of community engagement, and a pillar of wildlife conservation.

2004: The Year of Establishment

The journey began with 17 dedicated landowners who removed over 200 kilometers of fencing to establish the Zululand Rhino Reserve (ZRR), creating a safe haven for wildlife.

2005: A New Home for Wildlife

The reserve welcomed its first residents, including a herd of elephants and a founder population of black rhinos. Twenty leopard tortoises also made their home here, signaling the start of a flourishing ecosystem.

2006: New Life on the Reserve

Amazibulo, the first black rhino calf, was born—marking a milestone in conservation success. The reserve introduced 118 buffalo and expanded its rhino population with additional black and white rhinos.

2009: Official Recognition

On April 23, ZRR was officially proclaimed a nature reserve under the Protected Areas Act. This year also marked the introduction of cheetahs, further enhancing biodiversity.

2011: Big 5 Status Achieved

With the introduction of lions, the reserve achieved its Big 5 status, solidifying its reputation as a premier conservation destination.

2015: Year of Challenges

Rhino poaching hits home: 10 rhinos lost, leaving one survivor and one orphaned. In response, the reserve took decisive action, constructing nine guard towers, bolstering our Anti-Poaching Unit and started with dehorning the entire rhino population to deter poaching and ensure the survival of the species.

2016: A New Identity

Amid the worst drought in 80 years, the reserve underwent a name change to Manyoni Private Game Reserve, meaning “place of birds.” This transformation reflected its expanding mission and growing biodiversity.

2020-2021: Without Tourism, there is No Conservation

The COVID-19 pandemic tested the reserve, but Manyoni in partnership with the Zululand Conservation Trust rose to the occasion with community food distribution programs and innovative fundraising efforts, reinforcing the vital connection between conservation and community.

2024: Two Decades Strong

This year marks two decades of relentless dedication to conservation. From drone technology revolutionizing anti-poaching efforts to expanding the reserve by 500 hectares, Manyoni continues to lead with innovation and passion.

Key Achievements Over 20 Years

  • Wildlife Conservation: Successfully reintroducing and sustaining populations of black rhinos, cheetahs, lions, and pangolins.
  • Community Engagement: Building crèches, supporting local education, and initiating food security programs.
  • Anti-Poaching Efforts: Establishing a K9 Unit and implementing cutting-edge security measures.
  • Sustainability: Navigating droughts and economic challenges while maintaining a thriving reserve.

As we celebrate this milestone, we honor the landowners, staff, conservation partners, and supporters who have made this journey possible. Together, we look forward to a future where Manyoni continues to thrive as a sanctuary for wildlife and a beacon of hope for conservation.

Here’s to 20 more years of safeguarding our planet’s precious biodiversity!
